Christmas in Birmingham

Things to do in Birmingham this Christmas

One of the best things about the colder months is that Christmas is round the corner. That means gingerbread men, seasonal coffee and copious amounts of mulled wine. It also means spending time with the extended family you’d forgotten you had, but that’s never really a bad thing! At Park Regis Birmingham, truly believe Christmas is one of the most magical times of year. You’re surrounded by warm colours, golds and warm fairy lights, whilst eating your weight in mince pies and cheese, after all.

But that’s not the only reason we love Christmas – as soon as the festive season begins, Birmingham becomes inundated with activities, events and shows to help friends and family get into the festive spirit. So, we’ve put together five great things to do with family, friends and even work colleagues in Birmingham during the festive period.

1. A Weekend of Christmas Shopping

Birmingham is synonymous with the Bullring, which has strong historical roots within the heart of the second city. This incredible shopping and leisure complex is located off of New Street, a short walk away from Grand Central and houses shops such as Pandora, River Island, Paperchase, HMV, The Entertainer and so much more. A weekend of Christmas shopping, met with a pit stop of tasty food and delicious coffee is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit, and with so many shops to choose from, you’ll be sure to find a bargain.

2. Visit The Frankfurt Christmas Market

16th November 2017 – 24th December 2017

The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market

What would a Brum Christmas list be without The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market? After its almighty 50th Birthday last year, the Market won’t be here as long so you need to get it in whilst you can.

Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market is the largest Christmas market held outside Germany and Austria, and offers of authentic German and Austrian trinkets and delicacies, Get yourself some bratwurst and wash it down with steins of beer, mugs of mulled wine and alcoholic hot chocolate, whilst browsing the offerings of German crafts, twinkly lights and mouthwatering smells of sweet treats.

3. Watch Love Actually Live in Concert

4th – 6th December 2017

The Nation’s favourite Christmas film is being screened with an orchestra, and we couldn’t be happier! Just down the road from us at Symphony Hall and the ICC, you can watch Bill Nighy on the big screen perform his iconic (and questionable) version of Wet Wet Wet’s ‘Love Is All Around’ alongside other live musical performances of ‘White Christmas’ and so much more. We guarantee you’ll fall in love, actually. Get tickets here.

4. Magic Lights Festival at Birmingham Botanical Gardens

November 29th 2017 – January 1st 2018

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens in Edgbaston is one of the most magical places to go during the festive period, at it is easy to see why. Last year we were blown away by the Magic Lantern Festival, and this year we’ll see trees dripping in fairy lights, a fire garden and so much more. You’ll get to explore the Botanical Gardens as you explore the beautifully lit up trail, helping you to get into the festive spirit. Make sure you check out the steam boat ride, and try toasting your own marshmallows. We tried the gin flavoured on last year, and it was great! Find out more here.

5. Christmas Music by Candlelight

December 19th 2017

If you really want to get into the festive spirit, then Christmas Music by Candlelight at St Paul’s Church is the way to go. You’ll be amazed at how the dark interiors of a church can be transformed by flickering candlelight and Christmas Carols. Tickets are available via the Symphony Hall website.
